Sporadic's Core

Sporadic is best described as gamifying exercising. Sticking to a routine can be tough, and for some, they need something a little more exciting. Sporadic helps break those barriers by introducing spontaneity to activity, as well as making it social.

Users can join with their friends and randomly during their day receive a workout challenge with a custom exercise. Everyone in the group has 15 minutes to complete the challenge.

It could be 15 push-ups, or 12 sit-ups, or a 42 second wall sit, for example.

The goal

The product is not meant for those who have a heavy workout routine, or are trying to gain muscle or even particularly lose weight. It is meant as a supplement to keep people from becoming complacent during their day. Users can enjoy challenges, motivate their friends, and get that touch of fitness daily to keep them on their toes.

Onboarding

Onboarding is a crucial step in the experience. If the onboarding process fails to capture the user's attention, they'll dip. We've refined the process to keep things as short and sweet as possible.

One key feature we focused on was relying on iCloud for user accounts, so users never have to sign up with an email or phone number — helping to reduce any friction.

App icon

The app icon went through a few variations. We found out (through a user's feedback that our initial squats app icon looked like someone making a bowel movement — whoops) that making an app icon that conveyed emotion had the most impact. I used Apple's new Icon Composer to introduce the new iOS26 glassmorphic look to our cozy workout buddy that is at peace with himself and his new-found gamified workout app.

Final thoughts

The app is still a passion project my brother and I work on from time to time, so we're not done finding ways to increase impressions, downloads, reviews, and eventually have the data to reduce churn, increase profits, and make an app that people can truly enjoy using every day.
